The entire country of Jordan could be described as an outdoor history museum. In addition to the big three Jordan tourism sites of Petra, the Dead Sea and the site of Jesus Christ's baptism, other jaw-droppers can be found very close to the capital of Amman. Once named Philadelphia after an Egyptian conqueror, Amman is a modern city of 1.5 million people, overlooked by a hill full of temples and shrines that date back to the Bronze Age.

Most of the country's major historical sites are within a 230-mile-long stretch that start a little north of Amman, and runs down the western edge of the country to the border with Saudi Arabia. At these sites, you can walk in the footsteps of biblical luminaries like Abraham, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Lot, Ruth and Elijah, as well as Roman emperors, Persian kings, crusader knights and the Arab army of T.E. Lawrence.
